“Ain’t your fault, Tom. Sorry you went to such a heap of trouble.”

Emma asked the question everyone was thinking.

“Now what do we do?”

“Maybe we could take Dusty home and keep him in my basement?” said Carrot Boy. “My mom never goes down there.”

“Lucas, look at me,” said Emma, sternly. “You are not keeping a zombie in your basement.”

“Thanks for the offer, Lucas,” said Dusty.

I said, “Maybe we could…” But then I couldn’t think of anything.

Emma sighed. “Well, this was a complete waste of time.”

“Not cool, Emma!” said Carrot Boy. “How’d you feel if you were expecting to go to an awesome place, where, like, all your dreams would come true, and then you couldn’t do it?”

“Excuse me?” she said. “That just happened to me! They closed Grover’s Square Outlets before I could finish shopping.”

“I’ll be all right,” said Dusty. “Let me off here. I’ll just mosey on down the road.”

“No way,” I said. “I’m not gonna leave you here.”

“Wait! I have an awesome idea!” said Carrot Boy.

“Is it as awesome as your put-him-in-the-basement idea?” asked Emma.

He ignored her and turned to me.

“You should bite him, Tom.”

“What?!”

“Turn Dusty into a Vam-Zom. Then, at least he could turn into a bat and fly away or turn into smoke and hide from people better.”

Emma said, “That idea is fifty percent crazy and fifty percent insane.”

“I don’t know what would happen if I did that,” I said. “And he’d have to get blood every day.”

Dusty scratched his chin. “Maybe I should just get on back to the carnival? Least there I know I get fed. Roof over my head. No chance of bitin’ nobody.”

“I’m not gonna let you go back to Boss Man!” I said.

And that’s when we heard a voice.

“Don’t move…. Stay where you are…. Just turn around…nice and slow.”
